Perspective and Importance

In this modern era, computer science is an enormously vibrant field. Since its inception just half a century ago, computing has become the defining technology of our age. Computers are integral to modern culture and are the primary engine behind much of the world’s economic growth. Moreover, the field continues to evolve at an astonishing pace. New technologies are introduced continually, and existing ones become obsolete almost as soon as they appear. This department is quite aware of this fact and makes the best possible efforts to impart the latest knowledge which is tuned to the need of industry.

History

The Department of Computer Science has made it a regular feature to conduct IT awareness program for the general community. Such programs are usually arranged during the one month semester break

The Department of Computer Science is involved in extensive research work to including distributed databases, theoretical computer sciences, MIS and weather prediction systems. Different research groups like Network Interest Group, Distributed Databases Group, Programming Language Group are working in this regard. The department is in a process of launching IEEE student chapter at COMSATS and COMSATS Computing Research Journal. To further enrich the research culture the department is in a process of attaining membership of world class journals including IEEE and ACM. The department recently launched MS program in Computer Sciences which inculcates rigorous research and practical work. The Computing research LAB along with four other computer labs is facilitating the students in this regard.

The Department also arranged 1st COMSATS Workshop on Research & Computing in April 2005 at local hotel IN Abbottabad & 2nd in Lahore which were attended by prominent researchers from the country. In these workshop’s 20 research papers were presented in each workshop .All the eminent educationist from the country attended and appreciated these workshop’s.

The Department is actively involved in making all the necessary arrangements for FRONTIER OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (FIT 2005) to be held in December 28-29 2005 at Marriot Islamabad.

During this year eminent personalities of the field gave their thorough thoughts on different topics like computer simulation, research methodologies, entrepreneurship and software out- sourcing. Such seminars are a regular activity of computer science department which results in value addition of the students.
The department also encourages and prepares its students to compete in different curricular & co-curricular activities. During this year our students secured first position in different events.
