MILES – TechnoMoot 2009 at CIIT Abbottabad.

Department of Management Sciences, COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), Abbottabad organized MILES 2009 under the umbrella of TechnoMoot 2009 on May 11-12, 2009. MILES provides a platform for not only the business students but also the working entrepreneurs, managers, businessmen and faculty for interaction and exposure within their community at national level for sharing the latest trends in the field of management sciences.

Objectives

  • To establish a link between university and industry by providing a platform to academicians and industry professionals for knowledge sharing, brainstorming and general awareness.
  • To provide a forum for interaction and exposure between academicians and researchers within their community at national level for sharing the latest trends in the field of management sciences through renowned professionals and practitioners of the field.
  • To assess and acknowledge academic and research capabilities and competencies of business students by providing them a national level competitive platform and to give them the exposure to interact with the students of leading universities of the country to share the first hand knowledge, experience and information.
  • To make students aware about the knowledge and prevailing practices in the corporate world.
  • To provide a platform to the entrepreneurs so that they can get the first hand knowledge of the available business plans and management practices and share their concerns with the leading academicians and researchers for possible solutions. Also to provide them the opportunity to exhibit their products and services.
  • To develop a liaison among the universities for faculty exchange programs.

DAY 1: May 11, 2009

Two events namely MCC (Management Concepts and Cases)-Seminar Series and BIZCOM (Inter-University Business Plan Competition) were held on Day 1.

MCC (Management Concepts and Cases) –Seminar Series
The objective of the event was to provide a forum for interaction and exposure between academicians and researchers within their community at national level for sharing the latest trends in the field of management sciences through renowned academicians, and professionals of the field.
Three sessions with two presentations in each session were held. All faculty members and a large number of students of the Department of Management Sciences Department, CIIT Abbottabad participated in the event.

Highlights of the events

Professor Amanullah Khan, Dean Faculty of Management Sciences, Rifah International University, Islamabad in principal agreed to have a special 2-3 day training session for faculty of Management Sciences, CIIT Abbottabad.

BIZCOM (Inter-University Business Plan Competition)
BIZCOM was a national level event that provided a platform to undertake a healthy competition among the students of Business Departments of the leading Universities of Pakistan through conducting research on underperforming domestic firms with a special focus on ‘Small & Medium Enterprises’ and by developing and presenting a business plan for their sustainability and competitiveness.
The event was also aimed to provide the participating students of HEC recognized universities to have a Business Plan Competition. The event provided an opportunity to put ideas into action by preparing and presenting their business plans on innovative ideas focusing on SME sector of Pakistan.
A total of 10 teams from 7 universities participated in the competition. Each team  comprised  2 students and one supervisor. The criteria for the evaluation was based on written business plans, already submitted by participating teams and power point presentations and question handling skills.

Judges of the event

  • Mr. Javed Khattak, Provincial Chief, SMEDA, Peshawar.
  • Mr. Syed Azhar Hussain Shah, Regional Operating Chief, NBP Abbottabad.

Ms. Mamoona Iftikhar and Ms. Saira Javed of CIIT Abbottabad got the first position but as they were from the host university, they were given Consolation Prize. Thus, the first three positions were grabbed by:

    1. IM Studies, Peshawar University.
    2.  Islamia University Bahawalpur.
    3. CIIT Islamabad.

Highlights
Mr. Javed Khattak, Provincial Chief, SMEDA, Peshawar announced that the next event of BIZCOM will be sponsored by SMEDA and the Industry. He also assured that an MOU between SMEDA and CIIT Abbottabad will be signed soon to establish Entrepreneurship Development Center for creating linkages between CIIT Abbottabad and the Industry.
Mr. Syed Azhar Hussain Shah, Regional Operational and Business Chief also announced that NBP will provide internship facilities to CIIT Students.

DAY 2: May 12, 2009
Entrepreneurs’ Corridor
The objective of the event was to provide an exposure to business students, faculty and local entrepreneurs to get first hand knowledge and share their experiences with the people from the leading industries of Pakistan. The event provided exposure to business students towards entrepreneurial activities in small and medium enterprises. The participants of the event were local entrepreneurs, faculty members and students of CIIT Abbottabad and other universities.

Mr. Pervez Ahmed, Founding Director and the CEO of Pak Qatar Takafful Company, Mr. Zafarullah Khan, Executive Director, Center for Civic Education, Islamabad delivered revealing and enlightening talks.
Mr. Ahmed discussed in detail the objectives and responsibilities of Pak Qatar Takafful Company in providing the Shariah Compliance solutions for family insurance. He also elaborated the possibilities and opportunities available for the students in the emerging field of Takafful in particular and in Islamic Finance in general.

Mr. Zafarullah Khan also delivered a very informative lecture on the importance of education. He stated that all efforts must be made to educate and raise awareness among the citizens of Pakistan about their rights and responsibilities. This can be done through trainings and consultancy. He emphasized that only
those nations can survive who are able to catch the pace of the knowledge and information and we being Pakistanis should spare no efforts in imparting quality education.

MILES 2009 was a great success and all participants were very appreciative of the efforts of CIIT Abbottabad for arranging such a successful event.
