| Why B.S. in Earth Sciences? |
Earth or Geological sciences are the sciences that study Earth, its physical and chemical composition and its history, including Earth's Evolution within the solar system. Earth Scientists are particularly interested in the geological processes that have shaped our planet and will continue to modify it in the future. In addition to understanding the way Earth works and its relation to the solar system, Earth Scientists are involved in the search for energy, minerals and water resources, the evaluation and remediation of environmental hazards, and the prevention and/or prediction of natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, erosion and floods.
Geoscientists need not to go too far to reach the frontier of knowledge. What is not known about the Earth exceeds far more what is known. Why should you major in such a science? Because we need to know about the planet we live on, explore for much needed hydrocarbons, play a role in building of dams and roads, search for mineral resources, and work for better environment. A BS degree in Erath Sciences provides access to all these excellent career paths.

| Why choose CIIT Abbottabad? |
The Department of Environmental Sciences at CIIT Abbottabad, is proud to offer a program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Geology and Geophysics. The program is designed to provide a solid foundation in the Earth Sciences with elective course sequences that prepare students either for graduate study or for occupations in industry, business, government and education.
The unique location of Abbottabad provides easy access to the most diversified set of geological features that are related to the youngest and the highest mountains of the World, i.e. Himalayas. These include all three types of rocks (i.e. igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary) ranging in age from Precambrian (800 million years) to Recent, a large number of seismically active faults e.g. Main Mantle Thrust, Main Boundary Thrust and their offshoots, a variety of mineral and gemstone deposits and many geomorphological features. Similarly, a great diversity of physical environments (e.g. cold, dry, humid, arid, lacustrine, glacial, riverine, etc.) biota, and lands are available within a short distance from Abbottabad.

| What is special at CIIT Abbottabad? |
B.S. in Earth Sciences is a new program at CIIT Abbottabad. It is going to be taught in a friendly and field-oriented way using state of the art teaching and laboratory facilities. Students will have ample opportunities to learn from and know their professors and other students of the CIIT family during course work, field trips and at other extra curricular activities. The program is going to involve students in research as part of a professor's research and to complete a required Senior Thesis project. These research efforts prepare the student for further academic study and also for careers that most often require the individual to write and communicate well and to plan and execute logistically-sound projects. |

| What specializations are available? |
The Department of Environmental Sciences in initially offering two majors in Earth Sciences: Geology and Geophysics. The curricula of each major are designed to train and educate students in their fields of specializations of their choice and interest. Within these two majors a number of specialization will be available to choose from including Mineralogy, Gemology, Petrology, Environmental Geology, Economic Geology, Engineering Geology, Petroleum Geology, Applied Geophysics, Geochemistry, Sedimentology, Structural Geology, Tectonics, Neotectonics, Hydrogeology and Glaciology. |

| What are the career opportunities? |
| Earth scientists are well trained not only in Geosciences, but are also trained in related disciplines such as biology, chemistry, computer sciences, mathematics, and physics. This multidimensional training allows the Earth Scientist to have a broad-based view of most scientific problems. With this diverse training, a geologist qualifies for making logical and rational decisions on difficult and challenging problems. |
 |
The B.S. degree in Geology or Geophysics qualifies students for one of many rewarding, well-paying, and exciting careers. Because of the diversity within the geological sciences, numerous career opportunities are usually available. Geologists are employed in private industry, government agencies and educational institutions. Many geologists are also employed in consulting firms that work on challenging problems in engineering geology or in various environmentally sensitive aspects of hazardous waste disposal and hydrogeology. A large number of geologists and geophysicists find career jobs with high salaries in multinational petroleum and mining companies outside Pakistan. Opportunities are available for those who desire to own and operate their own firms.
Earth scientists or geologists, per se, often use other titles, depending on their area of specialization. The geologist may be called a geophysicist, petroleum geologist, gemologist, mineralogist, seismologist, paleontologist, oceanographer, geochemist, volcanologist, engineering geologist, hydrogeologist, or soil scientist. All of these, and numerous other specialties, are based upon the science of geology. The large number of titles by which geologists are called indicates the diversity of possible careers. In addition, there are many other career opportunities that do not specifically require training as a geologist, but rather require the logical thinking skills that a geologist possesses. |
