Earlier this year, Dr. Mohammad Maroof Shah has been nominated for President’s Medal for Technology 2007 (PCST and MoST).  This nomination is among 50 other scholars and scientists who have excelled in their area of research and development.  The prize is of new in its kind and has been announced for the first time in the history of the country.

Brief profile of Dr. Maroof is given below…

Academic career
Dr. Mohammad Maroof Shah is a molecular geneticist working in the Department of Environmental sciences.
He completed masters (MSc-Hons) degree from NWFP, Agricultural University, Peshawar and a PhD degree in 1998 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA. 
He did his post doctoral trainings at Iowa State University of Science and Technology, USA during 1998-99 and worked for academia and industry in the USA for several years.
He has an outstanding academic career with Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals at various phases of his education.   

Research achievements
He published over 40 scholarly articles in international elite journals, magazines and research letters.  His research findings were well received and widely used by other scientists (over 70+ citations).   He is an Associate Editor of international Journals “Euphytica” published by Springer, and is serving as member editorial board on Genetics and Molecular Research, The Australian Journal of Agricultural Research, Crop Science, and Hort Science.  He is a  member of several professional and honorary societies including the Genetic Society of America, Crop Science Society of America, Gamma Sigma Delta, and Sigma Xi. 

Dr. Shah developed novel products, processes and methodologies which have been well received internationally.

Over the last 3 years he has been working under HEC’s Foreign Faculty Hiring Program and contributed significantly to improve education, research and development in the areas of biotechnology, molecular genetics and biological aspects of environmental sciences.  His major contributions include establishing research labs and research units, curricula development for graduate and undergraduate programmes, and advising graduate students in their degree programs.  Five  M.Phil students have completed their theses under his supervision, while 5 MS-PhDs are working on their programs.   Currently, he is principal investigator of one on-going research project and has submitted two additional projects worth over Rs. 10 Millions to HEC and PSF.
