Established in 2004, the department of development studies has been working day and night in producing socially aware and responsible graduates. Initially, student induction was done annually, owing to the increased demand now two admission sessions are conducted every year.

The program offered is Master of Development Studies (MDS)
Duration of the Program is two years with four semesters
Consists of 69 credit hours
Focus of the present Masters Program is on development courses that mostly have a bearing on the emerging and most current trends (knowledge, skills & practices) related to social development issues within the overall framework of sustainable development and inter-related spheres.

Frontiers of Information Technology (FIT) 2007
FIT 2007 marks a half decade of the international conferences on IT that started in CIIT Islamabad in 2003. The occasion was graced by fourteen international speakers from corporate sector and leading international universities. Contributions of senior engineers and emerging engineers in paper publication put the department at the top ranking of research.

EMCOT 2007

A total number of 120 projects from universities all over the Pakistan were displayed in this mega event of EMCOT 2007.The

Seminar on Optical Communications
A Seminar on optical communications was arranged in the Department of Electrical Engineering on Dec. 4, 2007 coordinated by Dr. Saleem Farooq Shaukat. Seminar was conducted in liaison with Frontier Cables Industries (Pvt.) Ltd. The team of Frontier Cables was headed by Prof. E. P. Tam.

Project Exhibition

The subject exhibition was held on 7th Sep. 2007 in Electrical Engineering department on the eve of convocation 2007. Many informative and modern projects were put on display for the students and the visitors.

Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) visit and accreditation

PEC officially announced the accreditation of B.Sc Computer Engineering for 3 years (up to the intake of batch fall 2005) and B.Sc (EE) for one year for the intake of the batch fall 2003).

PEC visited the Department of Electrical Engineering in May-June 2007 and it was a very successful visit for the overall department as on their return they expressed it as “Overall impression is positive, effective control of good management is observed. The moral of students and faculty body is high.

A PEC team visited CIIT Abbottabad campus for the zero visit of B.Sc Electrical Engineering (Power Systems Engineering) program on 17 July 2007.

The team thoroughly visited the Engineering labs and other education facilities at campus. As a result of this visit, PEC team has given “GREEN SIGNAL” for the initiation of the program from fall 2007.

Collaborative Research offers for CIIT

During FIT 2007, two projects, supervised by Ms Fozia Rajab Dad attracted attention of some foreign visitors who offered the opportunity of collaborative research in the field of brain computer interface. The projects were;

  1. Brain Computer Interface and
  2. Operation of a remote controller using electrical signals obtained from the eye

Dr. Ilyas offered assistance in this area in order to produce some practical marketable applications. Dr. Yaser Ajmal sheikh offered the opportunity of collaborative research in BCI. Dr. Shoukat Ali, Dr Zia Khan offered help in connecting CIIT with other institutes and research centers in USA working in BCI.

Department of Environmental Sciences

The department hopes to have about 50% contributions in the growth of campus.

The department was established in March 2004 with only three faculty members. And now we have 28 faculty members; among which 15 are PhD, 5 are MS/MPhil and 5 are MSc qualified in the related disciplines. With the current student enrollment of 106 students in BS, 21 in MS and 11 in PhD, the department of Environmental Sciences is thriving everyday.

In year 2007 over 80 research publications are contributed to the Environmental Science department which are published in National and International Journals and conferences. Apart from this the department holds the honor of filing the first patent with a US company and is proud of its faculty which has also published 4 books in the field.

A good number of research proposals for international and national projects have been submitted by the department. In 2007, three international project proposals were submitted out of which three were approved. At national level five projects are underway while COMSATS Institute of Information Technology is funding five research oriented projects in the field of Environmental Sciences.

One of our faculty members, Dr. Maroof Shah has been awarded the Best University Teacher Award, Dr Rubina Farooq has filled and approved the US patent, and we have 11 panel reviewers for research projects at our department. All these combine to ensure that students have richest pool of skilled researchers to inspire and impart academic and practical knowledge.

The Department of Environmental Sciences takes pride in contributing to the progress of CIIT Abbottabad campus. For the vision 2020, CIIT aspires to have 15 departments, fully functional and operating. Out of these 15 departments, eight are emerging from Environmental Sciences discipline; hence the department hopes to have about 50% share in the growth of campus.

Another landmark activity of the department is the International Conference on Environmentally Sustainable Development ESDev. In 2007, second EsDev was conducted which was attended by over 300 delegates which includes 70 scholars from 23 countries around the world.

Department of Management Sciences

 

The programs offered at the Management Sciences Department CIIT Abbottabad, aims at giving graduates an up-to-date grasp of their subjects, sophisticated technical skills and an appreciation of the applications and implications of modern administrative knowledge. Students are offered specialization in major streams like Finance, Marketing, Banking and Finance, Human Resource Management. The programme offers a blend of analytical and creative problem solving skills.

During the year 2007 the department has been actively engaged in numerous activities brief overview of which is provided below:

Activities

  • Launching of BS Economics Program
    The department of management sciences formally launched a new program BS-Economics in a graceful ceremony held on 2 July 2007.
  • Research Seminar Series at CIIT, Abbottabad
    As part of CIIT’s mission towards research a series of seminars were held at CIIT, Abbottabad from 20th September 2007-10th January 2008.
  • Paktel Internship program for youth at CIIT, Abbottabad
    CMPak Limited (formerly PAKTEL) initiated the 1st National Youth Internship Program and selected 14 students as Direct Sales Officers (DSO).
  • MILES (Managing Innovation, Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Strategies) at CIIT, Abbottabad.
    The Management decided after Techno Moot 2007 that department of Management Sciences will participate in Techno Moot 2008 with its own program like others such as Emcot etc. For this purpose a standing committee was formulated in May 2007.

  • One Day Workshop in Collaboration with HEC titled "Unlocking the opportunities for SME Entrepreneurs."

    The workshop was held as a part of university industry interaction project-initiated by HEC. The key events of workshop were:
    1. Presentations
    2. Pannel discussions of experts on various fields.
    3. Exhibitions of SMEs in which local entrepreneurs belonging to field like software, textiles, hosiery and construction participated.
  • Discussion Forum
    A forum was arranged to discuss wide range of issues from burning issues to religious, social, political and historical events. The speakers included members from within and outside the department.

Department of Mathematics

Since 2001 our department has published more than 50 research papers in International journals.

Mathematics department was established with the inception of CIIT in 2001. We are offering services to every department by teaching mathematics courses. In this regard we are offering 66 classes to undergraduate students and 5 classes to graduate (M. S.) students.

Department has initiated its M. S. leading to Ph. D. program since Fall 2004 with special emphasis on

MS Students and research
11 students had already completed their M. S. and every student has submitted at least two papers from his/her thesis for international publication. Out of which 9 are working in our department as lecturers and they are also involved in research.
