History

The establishment and history of CIIT Abbottabad campus, is as unique as is the success story of the campus in its academic performance and growth in the field of impartation of quality education to not only the deprived youth of the remote Northern areas, but also to the knowledge thirsty of the entire country. Establishment of an IT Institution in Abbottabad was a visionary challenge of Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman, the then Minister of Science and Technology. COMSATS came forward to accept this challenge as an opportunity, which was converted in to reality by Dr Haroon Rashid, the then Director of the Campus. General. (Retd.) Pervez Musharaf, the then President of Pakistan did the greatest service to the cause of education by offering 300 kanals of land at Tobe camp for establishing an IT Institute, which was graciously transferred by Pakistan Military and gratefully accepted by CIIT.

In a record period of 90 days, the dynamic leadership and untiring efforts of Dr Haroon Rashid, managed to convert the dilapidated barracks and over grown jungle in to a vibrant seat of learning and on 3 September 2001, CIIT Abbottabad opened its doors to the knowledge thirsty youth of Hazara and northern areas of Pakistan. Three undergraduate programs of Information Technology, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering were initiated with an initial intake of 121 students.

The tranquil atmosphere of the area, and the dedication of the faculty and staff of the campus, was the engine which gave impetus to the phenomenal growth in the academic offerings to the students. In just a matter of nine years, the Campus is offering 12 undergraduate and 06 graduate programs under eight departments. The student's strength has increased from 121 to approximately 5012, in 2010, which is a 41 fold increase. A Commendable performance and growth by any standard. Our faculty comprises of 429 highly qualified and dedicated teachers including 77 PhD Professors.

To meet the challenges of the National commitment to education, CIIT Abbottabad plans, in the coming years, to launch 17 new departments with a focus on science led engineering, social, medical and agriculture sciences. Future of CIIT Abbottabad campus is as challenging and exciting as the offerings of a wide array of contemporary disciplines offered to the coming generation of leaders and scientists. We do not distribute degrees; we breed a generation of leaders and live true to our Motto 'We Aim to Inspire'
