A three day Collaborative Workshop on Participatory Research and Capacity Building of Institutions in Afghanistan and Pakistan in Sustainable Sanitation was organized by the Department of Development Studies, COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Abbottabad and Department of International Environment and Development Studies-Noragric.
The purpose of the workshop was to bring together key researchers, implementers and policymakers working in Water and Sanitation (WATSAN) institutions in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and see how the two countries can move forward together in developing sustainable approaches and innovative technologies to address sanitation challenges currently being faced in this sector.
Dr. Bahadar Nawab Head of Department, Development Studies/ Sustainable Water Sanitation Health and Development, CIIT Abbottabad, welcomed all the guests at the opening ceremony. This was followed by a brief introduction of the workshop given by Dr. Gry Synnevaag, Head of Department, International Environment and Development Studies, (Noragric), Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB).
The participating organizations briefed the audience about their ongoing activities and approaches in WATSAN and challenges being faced by them in terms of sustainability. Discussion regarding the interdisciplinary applied research and capacity building programs in sustainable sanitation was also carried out and ways were sorted out for better focusing the work to address the needs and challenges being faced by those who are working in WATSAN in rural communities.
The workshop provided means for developing concrete institutional linkages and capacity building activities. It will definitely improve the ability of local institutions to actively engage in the development of innovative WATSAN approaches and technologies.
Efforts were made to find out ways that will support WATSAN institutions in Afghanistan by linking them to the programs which have already been developed in Pakistan so that they can be a part of a joint, regional effort in addressing the critical issue of sustainable WATSAN.
