World Space Week 2018

World Space Week celebrated at CUI Abbottabad on October 9-10, 2018 with the collaboration National Space Agency, SUPARCO.

The World Space Week, is an international celebration of the contribution that space science and technology makes for the betterment of the human conditionUnited Nations has declared World Space Week as October 4-10 annually. It is celebrated in 65 nations of the world including Pakistan. Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), as a national space agency, has been regularly conducting World Space Week activities each year since 2005 to increase awareness of space technology and to promote its peaceful usage amongst students and the masses in Pakistan. This year as well, SUPARCO has extended WSW activities throughout Pakistan.

At CUI Abbottabad the Space Week was celebrated on October 9-10, 2018 and about 12 colleges and schools of Hazara division participated. Theme for this year’s World Space Week is ‘Space Unites the World’. During this time the events and educational programs related to space are held globally every year. AT CUI Abbottabad campus, the following competitions took place during World Space Week 2018Bilingual Essay Writing Competition, Space Photography, Bilingual Declamation Competition, E-Poster Competition, Space Story Competition, Exploring the Earth with Google Earth, Painting and sketching Competition, World Space Quiz, Space Documentary, Satellite Model Making competition, and at the end a Closing Ceremony was arranged to award certificates and prizes among the participating students. There were more than 200 students from different colleges of Hazara region who participated in different activities. Students of three different societies were the main organizers of the event, which included COMSATS Literary Society (CLS), Aadrish, fine arts society, and IEEE an Engineering  students’ society. Mr Wazir KhanDirector SUPARCO was the guest of honor at the occasion, and Mr. Bilal Aslam, Assistant Manager, SUPARCO was the main coordinator from SUPARCO. The schools and colleges that participated include: Army Burn Hall Girls School, Government College of Technology, Abbottabad, Govt. Polytechnique College Mansehra,  Pakistan International Public School & Girls College, Abbottabad, Tameer-i-Nau Public School & College, Mansehra, Beacon House School System, Abbottabad, The Creators College, Abbottabad, Government post Graduate College No.1 Abbottabad,  and a few others.

Prof. Dr. Shahid Khattak announced the ceremony open at the opening ceremony on October 9, 2018. He encouraged the students to participate actively, and the interest developed at this stage went a long way in building and planning the careers of the students. Mr. Wazir Khan, the senior representative from SUPARCO highlighted the successful launch of Pakistan’s first remote sensing satellite, PRSS-1 and PAKTES-1A. He further demonstrated it’s potential for human development. The closing ceremony took place on October 10, 2018 at 4:00 pm, the guest of honor at the closing ceremony was Prof. Dr. Mushtaq Khan Jadoon. The convener extra-curricular activities, Dr. Amjad Hassan, AP Environmental Sciences department had a very active role in all the activities of Space Week 2018. He guided and encouraged the students during all the competitions.

During the World Space Week 2018, a panel discussion took place where Experienced and expert faculty and MS/PhD students from Geology Department, Environmental Sciences department, Computer Sciences department, and Electrical Engineering department had a fruitful discussion on possible future collaborations and research data exchanges with SUPARCO. Professor Dr. Shahid Khattak was the focal person for this meeting and Senior representative from SUPARCO was also present.

Overall the event was a great success and students from different schools and colleges were happy. They found the environment on campus very friendly and were inspired by the faculty and students of the campus as well as the focal person from SUPARCO. Space Week left a lasting impression on the students and they looked upto SUPARCO visiting in the coming years so they can participate in this healthy activity in future too in the city of Abbottabad.
